Find out how often you’re set up to file VAT

Most businesses are set up to file VAT quarterly, although some file it every month. If you file quarterly, there are different options set by HMRC for your VAT filing schedule.

To find out which months your VAT is due, check the VAT certificate that HMRC sent you in the post, or follow these steps to check online:

  1. Log into your HMRC account here: HMRC Services – Gov.UK sign in
  2. Scroll down and click 'View VAT account'‍
  3. Scroll down and click 'Your business details'
  4. You’ll find your VAT filing schedule on this page

Your VAT filing scheme

Once you’ve registered for VAT, your business is enrolled in either the standard or Flat Rate Scheme. If you enrolled on the standard scheme, you will charge your customers 20% VAT, and then pay this amount to HMRC. You’ll also claim VAT back on your business purchases.

With the Flat Rate Scheme, you pay a percentage of your sales to HMRC which is determined by your industry. For example, architects pay 14.5% VAT and construction firms pay 9% VAT. On this scheme, you don’t reclaim VAT on business purchases (unless they’re certain assets over £2k).

If you enrolled on the Flat Rate Scheme, a separate document will have been issued to you by HMRC, and you’ll also be able to view the details on your HMRC Services online account.
